Referrals/Patient Choice

The NHS gives you more choice and even more say in where you are treated.

If your GP refers you to see a hospital consultant you can choose to be treated at any hospital or clinic that meets NHS standards. This includes any NHS provider and many private hospitals, offering everything from treatment for cataracts to open-heart surgery.

If you don't want to make a choice and would prefer to go to the hospital you normally go to, that's fine too. Your choice of hospitals will depend on the type of specialist you need to see, but there is a choice for most medical conditions.

If you do need an outpatient appointment, it’s worth thinking about what is important to you. Perhaps you'll want to go somewhere away from home but close to your family. Perhaps good parking facilities are vital for you. Waiting lists, cleanliness, reputation... these can all be considered in your decision. The choice is now yours.
